tES and suprathreshold E

Post by plasticity »

In transcranial electric stimulation (TES) the applied E field amplitude at the level of the targeted cortex underneath the electrode is approximately 0.5V/m. Typically not more than 2mA of current is applied at the scalp electrodes to achieve such an E field amplitude. It’s not possible to go much higher than 0.5V/m because the current applied at the electrode is mostly shunted through the scalp and above 2mA pain and excessive heating will occur. TES uses frequencies in the range of 0-100 typically.

Here’s my question: With frequencies in the TES range what E field amplitude would be needed to reach threshold? Got any references?

Thanks again!!

PubMed is your friend. There is an extensive literature on electrostimulation, including but not limited to the topic of exposure standards. You might start by looking at
@Article{Reilly2016,
author = {Reilly, J Patrick},
title = {Survey of numerical electrostimulation models},
journal = {Physics in Medicine and Biology},
year = {2016},
volume = {61},
number = {12},
month = {Jun},
pages = {4346--4363},
doi = {10.1088/0031-9155/61/12/4346},
url = {http://dx.doi.org/10.1088/0031-9155/61/12/4346},
pmid = {27223870},
}
Side comment: this paper happens to have an entry in ModelDB.
