Postdoctoral simulator position

Two postdoctoral fellowships are available immediately as part of an ongoing project to develop a next-generation neuroprosthesis (brain-machine interface). The project involves the development of a multiscale brain model for bidirectional communication with the real cortex and thalamus during sensorimotor tasks. This offers a unique opportunity to link theoretical modeling work with experimental data. The candidate will receive training in a wide range of interdisciplinary skills, from machine-learning algorithms and realistic neuronal network modeling to electrophysiological data analysis. The position is based at SUNY Downstate’s Neurosimulation Laboratory (http://it.neurosim.downstate.edu), in collaboration with teams across 12 universities, as part of DARPA’s Reorganization and Plasticity to Accelerate Injury Recovery (REPAIR) project. Candidates should have a strong background in a brain-related field (computational neuroscience, neuroengineering, neurorobotics, or neurophysiology) and should be fluent in at least one programming language (C or Python preferred). Familiarity with Linux and version control systems is also desirable.

Programmer Position:

Two programmer positions are available immediately to work with simulated and real brain data for a DARPA-funded neuroprosthesis (connecting brains to robot arms) project. Lab runs Linux; simulations are run in NEURON using hoc and Python; a dedicated HPC supercomputer is available for this project. Ideal candidate should have fluency in several computer languages (C/C++, Python particularly) with experience working on large software projects using version control systems (Mercurial or Git preferred), and experience with optimizing code, algorithms, and data structures for parallel environment via MPI or multithreading. Background in scientific computing, network programming, and/or neuroengineering is also desirable.
